The St. Louis Style Hot Dog: Our City’s Official Flavor
Move over Chicago, Detroit, and New York—St. Louis finally has a seat at the table. The Road to the Official Hot Dog of St. Louis

The Decree is Final: It’s Official!
On June 15, 2022, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen made it official. Presented by Alderwoman Christine Ingrassia, a formal resolution declared Steve’s St. Louis Style Hot Dog as the Official Hot Dog of the City of St. Louis. It’s one of the few things the Board has ever agreed on unanimously—because you just can’t argue with a dog this good.
What Makes it a "St. Louis Style" Dog?
Every city has its "rules." In Chicago, it’s the neon relish and the "no ketchup" law. In St. Louis, it’s all about the perfect balance of savory, smoky, and tangy.
The Anatomy of the Official St. Louis Dog
- The Foundation: A premium, all-beef Nathan’s Famous hot dog—cold-smoked and fire-grilled to perfection.
- The Bun: A fresh-baked French roll from our friends at Vitale’s Bakery, toasted and lined with Provolone cheese (we tried Provel, but the melt of the Provolone won the popular vote!).
- The Toppings: Piled high with grilled onions, grilled green bell peppers, and zesty banana peppers.
- The Crunch: Crispy, smoky bacon (because everything is better with bacon).
- The Signature Finish: A generous drizzle of Steve’s house-made Smoky Pepper Mustard.
